Not even the warming glow of that morning’s sun, cast across the years-old bricks, could make anything about the looming structure of Her Majesty’s Prison Swansea seem at all welcoming. There was nothing about it, save perhaps for serial re-offending, that could make any person revisit there under their own power. Unless that person was Detective Inspector Graham Walker.

He pulled up in the carpark, much the same as he had those few days past, and stepped once more into what could only be described as South Wales’ accidental wind tunnel. It was a bizarre, almost spooky place, and it made lighting one’s cigarette almost impossible. That was okay though. He would smoke that one in the car. Ainsley wouldn’t notice. Not just the one, surely.

It was a stroke of luck that Graham had enjoyed his cigarette from the comfort of the driver’s seat, as the Dictaphone that Ainsley had lent to him for such tasks was sitting neatly on the opposite seat, just waiting to be forgotten and left there. More than once during his career, Graham had entered an interview situation without the means to record the conversation, and had felt a prize fool each and every time for doing so. He was glad then that the unnaturally strong winds had prevented such a thing from reoccurring.

She would have laughed in my face, he thought, smiling as he picked up the device and exited the old Jeep.

As it turned out, Graham would be the only person smiling in the grounds of HM Prison Swansea that morning. As he made the short journey from the carpark to the looming double doors of the prison’s entrance, he caught sight of the prison’s warden, standing between the towering door frames, and looking even more cold and stern than he had when they’d last met. It was only when Graham followed the man’s gaze that he saw why. There was an ambulance. Parked to the left of those doors. Parked next to a coroner’s vehicle.

Trouble in paradise, Mr Warden?

The man caught sight of Graham not a second later, and his lifeless face soon ignited. But unfortunately for Graham, not in a good way. As Graham approached the prison’s entrance, the warden took a step out into the morning cold towards him. What was left of his greying mane danced about in a lively way in the breeze, more than once getting into his eyes, and he stopped Graham’s advance with a flat, raised palm.

“Good morning, Warden. I was hoping to…”

“Nope. Not a bloody chance. Not today, Inspector.” The man’s tone was icy and clipped.

“I’m sorry?”

“I said, not today. I have far too much on my plate as it is without any of your nonsense.”

“My nonsense?”

The men’s conversation was abruptly halted as a medical trolley, carrying a lifeless passenger in a body bag, was wheeled past them and loaded into the back of the waiting van.

“Some trouble?” Graham asked.

The warden scoffed, pinching the bridge of his nose with forefinger and thumb. “Yes, you could call it that, I suppose.
